How War Is Changing The Economics Of A Ski Holiday

Conflict is raising the cost of reaching, running and building mountain resorts. The consequences extend from today’s rental returns to the people who will ski tomorrow.

For ski destinations in Japan, France, Sweden and the United States, the wars in Iran and Ukraine reach far beyond the price of a flight. They influence the fuel used to prepare the slopes, the materials needed to finish a hotel, the household budget available for a holiday and the money left to invest in the mountain.

Those pressures arrive while resorts are spending to improve snow reliability and attract visitors outside winter. A destination can need more investment at precisely the moment that its operators, customers and property owners have less room to fund it.

The effects are uneven. A business with secured electricity prices and modest borrowing faces a different winter from one buying energy on exposed terms and refinancing a development loan. A mountain within driving distance of a large population has different vulnerabilities from a destination dependent on connecting flights. Neither is automatically protected.

There is no sound basis for treating every weak booking figure or delayed project as a consequence of war. Snow conditions, exchange rates, local pricing and the supply of accommodation also matter. Nor does the desire to escape a troubled world necessarily translate into more spending on skiing.

The question for resort property is how these pressures interact. Can the destination remain accessible, maintain the experience that brings guests back and retain enough income to invest? And if the answer increasingly depends on charging a smaller group of established customers more, what happens to the people who have yet to learn?
