Japan’s resort businesses can become more connected without changing ownership, as a new alliance involving Marunuma Kogen demonstrates. The arrangement offers a useful example of how operators can extend their reach through promotion and customer relationships while retaining separate mountain businesses.

Nippon Ski Resort Development announced on 28 August that it has formed a business alliance with Nippon Paper Development, which operates Marunuma Kogen in Katashina, Gunma Prefecture. Plans include joint promotion and access through NSD’s shareholder-benefit arrangements from winter 2026/27, with cooperation during the green season also envisaged.

Marunuma remains operated by Nippon Paper Development, so the announcement is an alliance rather than an acquisition. NSD identifies it alongside Ogunahotaka and Miyagi Zao Eboshi as partner resorts beyond the eight mountains it operates directly; the release does not announce a new all-resort ski pass.

The distinction is commercially useful because the benefits of scale do not always require common ownership. An established operator may have customer relationships, promotional channels or systems that another mountain can access through partnership, while the local business retains responsibility for delivering the actual resort experience.

NSD’s published digital strategy provides background to that approach, describing shared infrastructure intended to support its group and partner resorts, including customer-facing ticketing and purchasing functions. That broader strategy should not be treated as confirmation that every product or system is already available at Marunuma, although it helps explain why a network relationship can have value beyond a joint announcement.

For accommodation businesses, the question is whether the alliance eventually makes the resort easier to discover, book and include within a holiday. A stronger promotional presence could introduce new customers, but the benefit to a particular hotel would still depend on its location, availability and ability to convert that interest into an overnight stay.

Property buyers should be equally precise about what has changed. Membership of a commercial network does not create a physical link between mountains, shorten a transfer or guarantee that customers will visit several destinations during the same trip. Those practical details remain central to the usefulness of any wider resort relationship.

The Marunuma announcement is therefore best understood as an expansion of commercial cooperation, with its eventual significance to be judged through the services and customer activity that follow. As Japan’s mountain businesses develop, tracking these agreements alongside acquisitions and new construction should provide a fuller picture of how the market is evolving.
